You’re the cinnamon to my sugar

Melkkos (milk food just doesn’t have the same appeal) is a quintessentially South African dish, basically just milk, sugar and cinnamon that is thickened with flour, and is the perfect winter warmer for a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Those unaccustomed to this thick, milky mixture might be skeptical at first, and rightly so, but trust me on this: You need to try it because it tastes like Christmas in a cup, it’s a satisfying cold weather indulgence AND it’s super simple to make! And if nothing else convinces you, it is filled with cinnamon and sugar, and that can only be good, right?

This is more of a phone-mom-on-a-Sunday-afternoon-to get-the-instructions than an actual recipe with exact amounts, but this is a tried-and-tested and passed-down-generations method, and not much can go wrong. And if it’s lumpy, don’t worry, it should be!

How I did it:

Bring 2 litres of milk with ¾ cup sugar (add more to taste) and a handful of cinnamon sticks to the boil. While the milk is warming up, mix 1 and ½ cups of flour with 1 egg until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs. Add to the boiling milk, turn down the heat and leave to thicken, stirring occasionally to prevent it burning at the bottom. It takes about 20 minutes to cook through. Serve sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar.

Let me know what you think of it!
